To clarify the issue of the phone number — it is not a matter of worrying about long-distance charges. Having a “local” number helps avoid immediately turning off a hiring manager who would not consider relocating a new employee.

If you’re planning to move somewhere new, you do not need to jump through all these hoops to land a job. Your future employer does not care if you have a local number (guess what? people have cell phones now – long distance charges not a concern). People understand that obviously you’re getting mail somewhere else if you haven’t moved yet. I’ve never had a problem relocating to a new city and finding a job before I get there. This isn’t 1995 anymore.
