This is a great comment. I definitely very much disagreed with Seth's earlier comment that resumes are not needed. At some point in the process, your resume must shine and carry your best foot forward.

A resume, used properly, is a powerful marketing asset and just as important as any other job search tool. I am a Job Search Coach for executives and tech leaders. I teach them how to maximize the resume to get and keep the attention of the reader by including the reader's priorities. Not every one of us is Seth Godin's "execptional," but we still have strong credentials and do a great job. The resume shows the employer you understand their needs and how your experience spefically maps to those needs, when done right.

Paige - You're right, it is important to have a resume handy no matter your job status. Constant updating is ideal. I can't tell you how many clients I have who can't remember specifics and can not access information that would bolster their resumes.

You never know when you might come upon an opportunity, and you don't want to have to stop everything to create a resume at the last minute. Especially in these uncertain economic times, having a resume ready to go at the drop of a hat is key!

As always, thanks for your thoughts!

I agree, Miriam. A resume is one of the most important professional documents you can have. If you don't have one...create one today! I just finished telling some of my co-workers how important it is to keep your resume current, even if you aren't searching for a new position.
I also recommend keeping a file with your accomplishments, new associations, publications, etc. to make sure you don't forget about any great things you have done. I keep mine up to date for my yearly review at work, but it really works!
I also agree that it is important to be up to date on the latest networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. I think every professional needs a LinkedIn profile.

Great post!
