Miriam, these are great ideas. I agree with Kay. Too often, people think about getting the contacts but not the long term relationship. I will be sure to share these ideas with my students and clients.

Great tips!! I agree that most job seekers are so wrapped up in “getting the contacts” that they donâ€t know what to do with them once theyâ€ve got them on their list. When attending any informal meetings and conferences, I made sure I have plenty of business cards to pass out that has all my contact information on it. I then ask them for their card and ask if I could connect with them on LinkedIn or twitter (or their blog or website). Then as you suggest, I would immediately request to connect when I got home.

Besides using Google alert, you can also follow your connections on LinkedIn under “news” and then “signal”. This area shows your connections new connections, status updates and postings. I try to look at this at least 3-4 times a month since I am not actively job-searching. For those who are actively looking, I would recommend more frequent reviews of your LinkedIn and Twitter accounts and make remarks when able to keep connected and show interest in those connections you think can assist with your job search.
