I like the advice about doing financial research on your list of target companies. Prior to this post I'd never heard of a 10-K report or the Mergent of Proquest Databases.

A few months ago I was on a pre-screen phone interview for a job at Geico. The HR rep asked me if I knew anything about the history of the company.

I told her "not much" and listed for the few pieces of info I knew off the top of my head, without doing any research. She sounded impressed and called back in a couple of days to schedule an interview.

Doing research on the target company can only help. With all the tools available online the will to do homework is the only limiting factor.
