I like to think of LinkedIn as a networking site instead of a place to look for specific jobs. Read up on my posts on “informational interviewing” for ideas to get the best information possible from your networking calls. It’s great that you aren’t “leading” with the fact that you are looking for a job…Perfect approach!

My area doesn’t have a lot of jobs in my field at the moment, but I am doing my best to interact with other professionals in the area.

One method I have used in the past is to email a person asking for information about himself/herself. I ask questions relating to the industry and how the person got started (we all like to talk about ourselves!). It can be a dead end if the person doesn’t respond, but if the person does, then I respond with follow up questions and eventually just let it slip in that I am looking for jobs in the area. I never ask a contact for a job. However, if I made a good impression, then they may remember me when they hear about a job opening.

Last week I met a (friend) at an event. We had met on LinkedIn. Found each other becuase we share interests and are in the same field. Stayed in touch through e-mail. Exchanged info. Supported each other. Then when we met we hugged and chatted like we knew each other. It was GREAT!
