Thanks, Walter! I agree - focusing on one's own story may seem more "me focused," but knowing that story (and telling it well) is a first step to being able to connect and resonate with an employer audience. I appreciate your comment!

Natalie - Thanks for your note. Yes - concise and truthful, and as it relates to what the employer wants to see!

Megan - Thank you! I like to think that focusing on a resume and job search with this targeted approach also helps job seekers hone their skills so they can market themselves better all around! I'm glad you agree!

Jacqui - Thanks! I always preach the importance of resume "real estate." I always told my students at Emory that they needed to be willing to "pay for" each word on their resumes, as if they were old-fashioned personal ads. If the word doesn't have value, it's a waste of space, effort and energy!

Obi - Exactly! Many job seekers fail to make a clear connection between what they offer and what the employer wants. Never leave it to the hiring manager's imagination! Thanks for your comment!

Great message Miriam! I couldn’t agree more that “it’s not about you, but about the employer.”

Interestingly, in an age of personal branding, it can sometimes seem like it’s all about “me, me, me.” Yet, even here, people with the strongest brands really understand the needs and wants of their audience and adapt their messages appropriately.

As you know, I’ve been doing a lot of work in helping people tell their story. Sure does seem self- absorbed; yet, even here, the focus always needs to be on what will resonate with your audience – making your story, paradoxically, a tool that benefits others!

Warm regards,
Walter

A good resume is the window to a successful career. Make it concise and truthful. Don't go overboard when selling yourself. Remember, it's not about YOU but THEM.

Miriam,

Well said! It's so critical that people do take the time to back up what skills they are claiming to have with not just experience but real tangible results.

In today's competitive job market, any and all job seekers should heed your words!

My best,
Megan
