Jannika - Jenny didn't suggest "checking out" people via their social media sites. In fact, as I note in the article, she advised against conducting background checks via these tools. In fact, the presentation was about how to connect with and attract job seekers to apply for positions and about how to share an employer brand that will apppeal to targeted applicants.

Hi Jenny!
I agree that social media has become important in the hiring process, which is both good and bad in my opinion. I guess that "checking out" potential employees and employers via facebook and twitter is a good way to verify identity and personality, but there is that fine line of private intrusion. There is website called www.safelist.com that allows verification of identity without having to look at a persons social media websites. I personally prefer keeping personal personal and business business.

In addition to an online resume, social media is growing in terms of recruitment. Job seekers are using this medium for seeking employment. It is amazing how things change over time. I thought you weren't suppose to mix business with social pleasure...

It's great to use social media but there are advantages and disadvantages in the way things are changing. One thing is for sure, the job seeker should also learn about the companies and their opportunities via social media to maximize the potential opportunities that are out there.

Mariam:
Thank you for attending the SHRM-Atlanta Annual Conference. I appreciate the ways you continue to help job seekers and HR/recruiting professionals. I'm honored that you chose to write about my session, including the questions that employers share with potential candidates.
