June 17, 2010 By Miriam Salpeter

Today’s post is one of many from members of the Career Collective community I co-coordinate with my colleague Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter.

This month’s question? How to heat up your job hunt? [Read more…] about Put some sizzle in your job hunt – how to find a job now

Job search advice for the weekend: embrace fresh starts and partner with experts

June 11, 2010 By Miriam Salpeter

It is easy to get caught up in what you are doing – like a hamster on a wheel – and forget to take the time to stop to evaluate what you have done. I don’t think many job seekers would disagree; it is difficult to step back and really look at how you [Read more…] about Job search advice for the weekend: embrace fresh starts and partner with experts

Do you follow companies on LinkedIn?

June 2, 2010 By Miriam Salpeter

You may already know that LinkedIn is one of the most popular (I might dare to say THE most important) site to optimize if you want to make it easier for employers to find YOU. But, did you know that LinkedIn now has a feature that encourages users to follow companies? Sound a little too much like Facebook’s offer to allow you to “like” a company or business?

Read my post at Job-Hunt.org to learn about the feature and how you can use it to propel your search.

Announcement: New social media job search expert at Job-Hunt.org

June 1, 2010 By Miriam Salpeter

I am very excited to announce that I have joined the terrific team of professionals at Job-Hunt.org as the Social Media Job Search expert! Thank you very much to Susan Joyce, editor and publisher of Job-Hunt.org since 1998, for inviting me to contribute to such a valuable resource for job seekers.

I have to admit that I had a “brush with fame” moment when I first spoke to Susan! Job-hunt.org is a site I have used and recommended for my entire career, so it was a special honor when she welcomed me on board.

When I say I am humbled to be joining an amazing team, I really mean it. The experts on board at Job-hunt.org represent a real brain trust of career advisors. I am pleased to count many of them as my friends. Be sure to visit Job-Hunt.org’s home page and review the list on the left – “help from job search experts” – to read their advice and to learn about a slew of career advice topics.

Read my first article here – about how LinkedIn allows you to follow companies, and why you might want to take them up on it!

Holidays are great for job seekers – a free eBook to get you started

May 30, 2010 By Miriam Salpeter

Are you on your way to a Memorial Day bar-b-que? Have you considered that it is a great opportunity to network if you are looking for a job?

Many new job seekers or people who haven’t looked for a job in a long time may not know about the “hidden job market.”  Sounds sinister, but all it really means is that most (70 – 80% or more!) of jobs aren’t actually filled with people applying to a job posting or announcement; they are filled via personal connections.

You can see why it’s a good idea to get on this networking bandwagon!  Networking is a huge topic, and I have tons to say on the subject, but since we are in the midst of another holiday, let’s leave it at this:

If you’re going to a picnic or party, you will probably have an opportunity to meet some new people.

How can you introduce yourself with an eye toward seeing if there is a potential career link with your new acquaintance?  Ask someone if they did anything fun over the summer…Strike up some conversations that have NOTHING to do with your job search.

You never know where you’ll meet the professional connection that will link you to a new opportunity.

If you’d like a copy of my ebook about how to optimize your networking for holidays (or anytime, really), subscribe to receive my blog via email. (You must subscribe via the email link to get the eBook, although RSS is an option as well.)

It’s free! Click here to subscribe and receive a free ebook.

Learn how I can help you navigate your job hunt.
