How social networking helps you get a job

February 15, 2016 By Miriam Salpeter

ComputerDo you consider your job search a marketing effort? Ultimately, you must market (or sell) yourself. Social networking tools provide great resources to allow you to market on your skills and accomplishments as your “product.” As more people join what’s known as the “gig” economy, in which jobs resemble a series of short-term stints instead of dedicated work to one organization, it will become even more important to learn how to market yourself.

Some ways social networking may help you land a job:

  • Your social media streams can demonstrate your good judgement. Focus on professional photos and content.
  • Demonstrate your expertise. People who wouldn’t otherwise know you can learn about what you know.
  • Grow your network and meet new people.
  • Learn new information.
  • Tell your story so no one can steal your thunder.
  • Use social media to sharpen your message.

Have social networking for job search questions? Join me at the Decatur, GA Book Festival

September 2, 2011 By Miriam Salpeter

If you’re in the Atlanta area, you may already be familiar with the Decatur Book Festival. The web site calls it the “largest independent book festival in the country.” I’ve attended for the past several years, and always enjoyed the variety of activities, vendors, authors and information available.

This year, I have a book to sell, and I am delighted to announce I’ll be in the Atlanta-Fulton County Library’s booth (#127) selling Social Networking for Career Success on Saturday from 2 – 4 pm (or later, if I have lots of visitors).

When you buy my book directly from me, I’ll send you a free copy of my Google+ Guide, a $6.95 value!

The library will also have crafts and storytelling for children, library card sign-up and information about what’s going on at their 34 branches

Please stop by to visit, ask questions about how to use social networking for career success and to pick up a copy of my book and Google+ Guide!

Learn more about what’s going on at the Festival on their website, and be sure to stop by the Atlanta-Fulton County Library’s booth on Saturday from 2-4 to meet me!

Tips to consider when evaluating your LinkedIn network

June 26, 2011 By Miriam Salpeter

What’s the most important thing to consider when building your network? Size? Quality of connections? Other factors? LinkedIn published a study that said men are better online networkers than women because they tend to have a greater ratio of connections compared to women.

The study did not look into the quality of the connections for the various groups. But when it comes to networking, having a large network isn’t always the key factor to success. Job seekers and others should always take into account the depth and breadth of their contacts in addition to the number of people in their circle. In other words, consider the quality of your connections in addition to quantity.

Watch this short video with tips to help you evaluate your network to be sure it will be ready to work for you when you need it!

For more details, click through to my U.S. News & World Report post on the topic.

How LinkedIn can help you find a job or a gig

April 16, 2011 By Miriam Salpeter

I’ve been writing regularly on my book’s site, Social Networking for Career Success, sharing some tips and highlights included in the book and thanking the many contributors who share their advice and expertise in the manuscript.

I believe LinkedIn is the first social network all job seekers and entrepreneurs should use and master.

Here are links to recent posts about LinkedIn on my book’s site:

Craig Fisher, who provided some LinkedIn tips about using keywords in chapter 5, allowed me to highlight advice from one of his recent blogs about using LinkedIn.

Tim Tyrell-Smith, manager of a LinkedIn Success Story group, and Timothy Puyleart, who runs a very successful, niche LinkedIn group, offered excellent advice about the advantages and challenges of creating LinkedIn groups. Learn more in the post highlighting LinkedIn groups.

Stay tuned for more links to posts with social networking advice thanking contributors to Social Networking for Career Success. Take a look at the entire list of contributors and links to their blogs and Twitter accounts.
